Stone’s Chapel deemed eligible for National Register

On June 16, 2011, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources’ State Review Board determined that Stone’s Chapel is eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.  For a copy of the preliminary information form, please visit the DHR website (scroll down the page to “Preliminary Information Forms” and Stone’s Chapel is listed in the Northern Region).  The next step is the submission of a formal nomination, which we hope to complete by the end of the year.

National Register nomination update

Good news! The Virginia Department of Historic Resources’ Evaluation Team has recommended that Stone’s Chapel is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.  The next step in the process is for the State Review Board to consider the staff recommendation, at their meeting on June 16, 2011.  If the State Review Board concurs with DHR staff, the Stone’s Chapel Memorial Association will proceed with completion of the full National Register nomination form.

Welcome to Stone’s Chapel

Stone’s Chapel Memorial Association (SCMA) is a non-profit organization, formed in April 2011, for the express purpose of preserving and restoring the former Stone’s Chapel Presbyterian Church near Berryville, Virginia.  The church building and adjacent cemetery are currently owned by the Shenandoah Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (USA).  The Presbytery has agreed to transfer ownership of the church building and cemetery to SCMA, provided that SCMA can create an endowment fund to provide for repair and maintenance of the property.  The directors of SCMA are in the process raising money for this endowment fund.  If you would like to make a pledge to the Stone’s Chapel endowment fund, please email stoneschapel@gmail.com.
